![]() Imagine downtown Vancouver (a rather bland building collection with a homogeneous height) in the middle of flat plains, it wouldn't look nearly as spectacular as it does in reality, with the mountain backdrop and the surrounding waters. It is not a city's buildings alone that makes a skyline - far from it. New York partly suffers from this because it simply has too many skyscrapers spread over a fairly large area - the main clusters are too far away from each other. Most skylines look attractive because of many different circumstances such as the setting and how the buildings are organized. When the new WTC is finished, nothing can touch it. So even the mindblowing pics, like the ones by RFC graphics below, don't do NYC justice because they don't fully capture the skyline. It's not possible to do this in New York: the midtown and downtown skyclusters are too far away from each other and Manhattan doesn't curve like Hong Kong. I would argue that Hong Kong looks more impressive in some photos partly because, due to its geography, someone with a tripod can stand on the southern tip of Kowloon and get an evenly distributed panographic image, like the amazing one above. I guess those are the most prominent contributions to Vancouver's night lighting anyways. I thought I'd post a few pics of some of the individual night lighting components of our skyline since there is no angle from which all can be seen in one shot.Ĭanada Place, the Pan Pacific Hotel, and the Harbour Centre. It has had some nice additions this decade though and has a few more coming up soon such as what will be the glowing tiles of the Shangri-La (our new tallest u/c). I think the skyline looks great at night, but in terms of special night lighting effects it seems to be lacking. ![]() The City Hyde Park project was also recently warded $11 million in tax increment financing.Ĭity Hyde Park, once completed, will be the home of the first Whole Foods on the South Side outside of the South Loop, along with space for medium box retailers and 180 apartments.I'm surprised to see Vancouver in somebody's top ten list near the beginning of the thread. It would also be eligible for tax deductions. It also would make City Hyde Park eligible for certain tax credits, including income tax. Joining the enterprise zone would allow Silliman to save millions of dollars on sales tax for building materials and some utilities. If the state approves the change, the enterprise zone will extend south down Lake Park Avenue to include the property where the Village Shopping Center currently sits. The only Hyde Park properties currently in the enterprise zone are at the corner of 47th Street and Lake Park Avenue. ![]() To build City Hyde Park, Silliman is requesting that the property be added to the enterprise zone that extends across the South Side as far west as Central Park Avenue and as far south as 123rd Street. The Illinois Enterprise Zone Act was signed in 1982 and intended to create growth in economically depressed areas. There are currently 95 enterprise zones in Illinois, the maximum allowed under the law. Illinois’ Enterprise Zone program intends to spur development and job creation in certain geographical regions in the state by relaxing regulations and granting tax incentives to developers who want to build in that area. On Friday the City of Chicago Committee on Finance met to hear the Silliman Group’s request that the property at 51st Street and Lake Park Avenue be added to Enterprise Zone 6. The Jeanne Gang designed building was initially scheduled to begin construction in the fall of 2013 but financial hurdles delayed the project. City Hyde Park is one step closer to having its financial ducks in a row so construction can start.
